Penguins
The penguins of Punta Tomba, Argentina have been declining, not because they are suffering but because penguins are "“marine sentinels,” their decline is a message that their marine environment is in trouble, chiefly from over fishing and pollution from offshore oil operations and shipping". Dr. Boersma says. Their breeding pairs have declined 22 percent since 1987. These penguins can swim up to 100 miles a day, but now just to get enough food they have to swim more than 40 miles farther from their nests.
Dr. Boersma says that these birds lay up to 2 eggs, but if there is a food shortage than the parents usually favor the first hatched and often the other chick doesn't survive. Climate change dangers than more because about half nest in burrows that are vulnerable to flooding. Dr. Boersma wrote “we have entered a new era of unprecedented challenges for marine systems.”
This is so sad to think what wildlife pollution will hurt. If it's effecting the whole penguin system think about the polar bears and the elk. It will be scary to watch this system totally digress. I am very interested in your post because I as a lot of people think of the welfare of animals.
ReplyDeleteAWWWWW Penguins!!!!! This is sad, if penguins are dying I think people need to wake up and realize what's happening in the world!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a horrible thing. I was watching planet earth the other day and the same thing is happening to a lot of cold weather animals like polar bears. A lot of the time they can't make the swim to the nearest land and they drown. That's one reason we need to make significant changes in our ways.
ReplyDeleteIf the penguins are now only favoring the first penguin their population goes down. If their population goes down what other ones do as well? What animals eat penguins? I mean how far will this affect our earth's populations? Very interesting Kari!
ReplyDeleteIt is really sad that the penguin population is suffering due to our own greedy oil use. These penguins have resulted to desperate measures to keep their species alive, even if that means focusing on keeping only one of their chicks alive. Do other species of penguins use this survival technique? From the research in my blog, I can tell you that penguins in the arctic are in danger, not because of oil spills, but because of increased global temperature.
ReplyDeleteThe decrease and extinction of so many animals has such a negative impact on the environment. We need to fix our habits so that we don't end up with half our animal species extinct.
ReplyDeleteWhat is causing the decrease in fish in the area that penguins live? Do a lot of people fish in that area? I didn't think that a lot of people would.
ReplyDeleteI don't see how it's not obvious to people that our addiction to oil is not only effecting our bank but it's effecting our planet and everything on it! Those poor penguins. It's sad that many animals are on the move because of the temperature changes.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to the radio a while ago, and on it they were listing the top ten things that are disappearing, and the first 9 were things like cassette tapes and lick-able stamps, but the last one was polar bears. They said that the polar bears are disappearing because they're homes are melting and they have no where to live. It is so sad that humans are so greedy and don't even realize it. People should not be causing the extinction of animals.
ReplyDeleteThis is really sad, They should put a hold on the fishing in that area until the fish come back.
